The Advent of Designer Jeans

By dilbert at 2010-10-16 02:48:17
UHello everyone! Are you a big fan of designer denim? Have you always wanted a pair of True Religion jeans, but don't live near a store that sells them? Well there is always the option of buying them online, which is very convenient for just about everybody! The only problem that arises with buying online is- "Are they authentic? How do you tell? How do you know you are not getting ripped off?" Well in this article, I will discuss a few ways that YOU yourself can learn to spot the REAL DEAL versus the FAKES! Ready?

Designer clothing as we would identify it today, came about at the end of the 17th century within the elite classes of our society. Around this time there was a massive divide between the people who had money and the people who didn't. One of the main goals of the rich was to show off their wealth to their peers whilst ensuring they stood apart from what they referred to as the 'unwashed masses'. They did this through their clothing with exaggerated styles being seen in the majority of clothing. For example clothes featured intricate detailing in expensive fabrics such as silk and lace whilst yards of material were used to create spectacular skirts.

However the poorer people of society admired these designs and started to try to replicate them with what they had available to them. This annoyed the elite classes and in order to make themselves look even wealthier and further differentiate themselves from the lower levels of society, they had to regular change their styles. In order to do this, they sought out clothes makers and commissioned one of pieces to be designed. And hence designer clothing as we know it today was born.

However it wasn't Strauss who first portrayed jeans as being a must-have item of clothing, it was in fact the advent of hit cowboy films throughout the 1930s that propelled jeans into the fashion arena. Once on screen heroes were seen clad in jeans, other people wanted them too and they were soon a highly sought after fashion garment. But alas, along came the war and not only was money extremely tight for those in both the United States and United Kingdom, but manufacturing capabilities were used elsewhere so sales of jeans practically halted overnight. However many America soldiers still wore their jeans whilst off duty and jeans started to become an iconic fashion statement throughout the western world.

Designer jeans were literally everywhere in Europe and were a symbol of the affluence and status of the society. Leading designer labels flooded the market in the 80's. Acid wash debuted in 1986 in Europe and took the market by storm. The 90's heralded the advent of a generation that was more concerned with old-fashioned values, environment and family life.

Then came the real revolution. In the 1950's, denim became a symbol of non-conformity worn by teens and young adults questioning the status-quo. Rebel stars such as Marlon Brando, James Dean and Elvis wore their jeans with just the right mix of sex appeal and rugged disregard of social convention. Those who set the social conventions of the day responded very appropriately by banning denim from schools and refusing to admit anyone wearing it to their places of business. A fashion star was born.
